Meet Author, Jeanine Connor

Jeanine Connor is a child and adolescent psychotherapist, supervisor and training facilitator whose work is psychodynamic in orientation. She has supported young people, and those who work with them, in a variety of settings for over twenty-five years.

Jeanine is the author of Stop F*cking Nodding and other things 16 year olds say in therapy (PCCS Books, 2022) and Reflective Practice in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy: Listening to Young People (Routledge, 2020). She is the editor of BACP Children, Young People & Families, reviews editor for BACP Therapy Today and psychology editor for Curriculum Press. Jeanine will offer us a glimpse into the different aspects of her work, with a rare opportunity to ask her (almost) anything about her work with young people and her writing career.

Book Testimonials

Graham Music is a consultant psychotherapist at the Tavistock Centre:

This is an absolute gem of a book. The nine stories ingeniously weave together a number of key considerations in this type of work: applied theory and theorists; psychoeducation; safeguarding; cultural sensitivity; the careful considerations of contact and boundaries with parents/caregivers, and much more. The book is also packed with useful resource recommendations. What I love most about Jeanine’s writing is the simplicity with which she explains even complex theory; after 25 years doing this work, she knows and models her craft effortlessly. At times messy, touching and funny, this refreshingly honest exploration of a therapist’s process, the workings of the teen mind and the power of the therapeutic relationship is certainly one to read. I rarely cry when I read books – I can’t even remember the last time – but I did with this one.

Caz Binstead is an integrative therapist working with young people and adults, a supervisor, founder of #traineetalk and co-lead of #TherapistsConnect :

This must-read book totally captures the complexity and fascination of working with this wonderful age group. I loved it. The accounts give an insight into those seemingly small (to us) yet hugely significant (to them) changes that young people experience when taking the brave step of giving psychotherapy a go. From start to finish, I was gripped. I recognised the client voices, so many touchstones, so eloquently delivered in the vivid dialogues.

I loved the contributions from the parents and carers too – often a missing voice in the therapeutic landscape, but so essential. The page-turning chapters are engaging, honest and courageous. Jeanine’s in-depth analyses draw on a range of psychodynamic and related theory to help make sense of what doesn’t always make sense to others. This is an essential, eye-opening read for those training to work therapeutically with young people, and it has much to say to experienced practitioners about staying authentic, keeping it real and generally being kind to yourself in moments of self-doubt. Prepare to have your heart in your mouth and laugh out loud at the same time.
